As the news flooded the internet on Karl Lagerfeld’s death, first rumors have started to come to light as to who will be the personality that will take his place in Chanel as a creative director.
Hedi Slimane (creative director in Celine) was thought to be his successor, being him one of Lagerfeld’s favorite designer, but Chanel announced in a commemorative instagram post that Virginie Viard, long-time Lagerfeld closest collaborator will take his place as creative director in the company “so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on”, and that Virginie Viard herself confirmed her commitment.
“The greatest tribute we can pay today is to continue to follow the path he traced by – to quote Karl – ‘continuing to embrace the present and invent the future’.” said Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion at Chanel. “Today, not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinary creative mind to whom I gave carte blanche in the early 1980s to reinvent the brand.” stated Alain Wertheimer, CEO of Chanel.
And by following the path no personality different from Viard could have best been chosen. Viarde collaborated with Lagerfeld most of his time at Chanel, giving birth to fabulous collections together.
